General Education Objectives
The primary objective of the General Education program is to provide
an education that serves as a foundation to an excellent liberal arts
program, through which individuals acquire the knowledge that is
essential for moving into their major field of study.
KIU's General Education offers a comprehensive course of studies, by
which it endeavors to develop individuals who have a broad perspective.
KIU also hopes to develop within its students other skills, insights and
attitudes that will enable them to be effective at cross-cultural
communication and in interpersonal relationships.
KIU's General Education Is Unique
KIU's General Education program has two distinctive features. First,
it offers students the opportunity to study a balanced curriculum within
the academic disciplines of humanities, natural sciences and social
sciences without over-emphasizing any one area.
Second, KIU offers an opportunity for students to acquire a
fundamental understanding of the history, politics, language and culture
of Japan. KIU believes it is important for Japanese students to obtain
not just an understanding of the Western world through cross-cultural
communication, but also an understanding of the principles of Japan
before they enter an international society. Similarly, international
students must understand their own countries, their roles as citizens,
and what role their country plays in the world.

Foreign Language Program: EFL & JFL
Foreign students are required to take Japanese as their foreign
language, and Japanese students are required to take English to obtain
the foreign language requirements for graduation. Students with an
advanced second language ability may receive credits for their ability
and be placed in advanced classes, thus reducing the number of courses
needed for graduation.
